The Wonder of It All

When you look through the eyes of a child at Christmastime, you begin to see the magic all over again, the wonderment, the excitement.
As an adult you have sorted the mystery of Santa, and reindeer, and such.
A child is still sorting through all of that.
So what meaning does it hold for us now?
A winter holiday?
A festive time of year?
A decorating frenzy?
For me it holds a time of remembering, a time of reflecting on Christmas's past.
This year holds the memory.
A Thumbelina Doll.
My first motherhood experience.
For the life of me, I was completely bewildered.
I being such a young girl, being given such a floppy big baby girl.
She came complete with her thumb in her mouth and a bottle that when you put it there, the magic fluid disappeared, then refilled itself as you held it upright.
My mom explained that I was to play with this????
I could not understand that.
How did you play with that?
What did you play?
My baby sister got the same doll, different colored hair, she took to it like a duck to water.
Talking to it, wrapping it in a blanket, singing to it.
Feeding it the magic formula.
Mine lay around and stared into space blankly.
I was 11 years old, and baby sis was 4.
I conveniently lost mind in the woods, and my baby sis, may still have hers tucked away in some storage container somewhere.
I confided in my dad, that it the doll scared me, and worried me that my sister thought it was going to come to life by that magic formular.
My dad laughed for years over this.
He said I told your mom to get you a pocket knife.

Good writing Rachel.... I was never one for dolls until Sindy came out, and I loved the miniatureness of it, the tiny clothes.. a red leather skirt I recall, and that was the start of my fascination with all things miniature from tiny steam trains, to dolls house furniture.
